I’ve already experienced more earthquakes than I remember. Most of them are small tremors, but there have been some that were almost panic worthy.

I sit through them coolly, outwardly unperturbed, but actually, each time the earth shakes, my insides tremble and turn to jelly. I can’t imagine what the big one must’ve been like. I couldn’t even stand, one teacher told me. I feel like I’m in a perpetual state of off-ness. Off-kilter, lilting steps, warped eyesight. I can’t tell if the earth is shaking or if it’s just me.
